Kozhikode located in the south west coast of Arabian sea holds an important place in the history of the world since this was the place where the Portuguese traveler Vasco Da Gama landed on in search of spices. Surrounded by the serene Arabian sea on the western side and majestic hills of Wayanad in the eastern side Kozhikode has all the flavors to form a perfect dish for the tourists visiting this place. Kozhikode is a lush green countryside with beautiful forests and wildlife, the serene beaches, rocky highlands and rich history which attracts all tourists. This district of Kerala is also known for its religious harmony and warm and friendly natives. In the middle ages city was known as the “City of Spices” and recently in 2012 it got its name as “City of sculptures” due to various sculptures. The warmth and friendly atmosphere that the natives provide in Kozhikode is the foremost attraction of this place.


Places to visit


Kozhikode Beach

The Kozhikode is a calm and serene beach which lies in the western side of Kozhikode along the Malabar coast. There are four roads over bridges which takes you to this beach. This hot tourist spot with the evergreen countryside has an ancient lighthouse built on two piers which provides a haunting view of the sunset. The exciting sight of spotting a few playful dolphins during dawn in the Dolphin’s spot keep tourists attracted to the beach. The beach is paved with stone and remains illuminated during late hours. There is a Lion’s park and aquarium for children. All public meeting in Kozhikode are conducted in the premises of this beach. A stroll through the beach shore will help us enjoy the fun of picking star fishes and spotting live crabs. Numerous stalls line along the beach side will provides us with seafood delicacies like kallumekaya and various other snacks. There are lot of activities like animal safaris, motor rides which will entertain the tourists. This late-night beach is a must-see spot in Kozhikode.

Beypore Beach

Beypore Beach, in a small village of Beypore is famous for its beautiful view of the sea and the charming Beach. This beach is pristine with never ending stretches of golden sand and tall coconut trees swaying in the cool breeze. This beach is known as the gateway to Lakshadweep since there are ships that ferry people to the island. It is historically an important trade and maritime centre with port and fishing harbors. The ship building yard in Beypore port about 1500 years old is famous for its traditional construction of the Uru or the Arabian trading vessel which is of great demand among the Arabs. Tourist can indulge in adventurous activities like surfing, parasailing, skiing, swimming, angling, sunbathing and many more. The Beypore beach which lies in the mouth of Chaliyar river is the best place to relax one’s mind and body with rejuvenating Ayurvedic massages. Tourists can the fun of shopping with varieties of eateries here in the beach side.

Mananchira square

The Mananchira square is a park situated around Mananchira, a man-made freshwater pond fed by natural spring in the heart of the city. It was built by Mana Vikrama, the last Zamorin King is being preserved in its original form from that time. The musical fountain and the landscape with Kerala style architecture is a pleasant sight. The estate area near to this now partly converted to a park. There are many beautiful statues of Dhothi-clad Malayalam writers inside the park. The park is beautifully lighted in dawn with an open-air theatre. This is a major spot in Kozhikode where the locals spend their evenings. The Kozhikode Public Library is situated here. The town hall and art gallery is also located nearby to this park.

Kappad Beach

Kappad Beach holds a remarkable place in the history of India since it is the land where the Portuguese traveler Vasco Da Gama landed. A small stone monument is erected here to mark this historic incident. Formation of rocks on all sides attracts tourists to stroll along this silvery beach shore. This rock laid beach can be reached through the virgin backwaters, enjoying picturesque beauty of landscapes ending up in an thrilling experience. An exciting feature of the Kappad beach is the rock that protrudes into the sea. Another major attraction of the beach is an 800 year old temple, located nearby Kappad beach. In this beach we can do many activities like boat riding, swimming and playing in the water. There are lot of beach side shacks which provides us with delicious seafood at reasonable cost. The short houseboat cruises at Kappad beach offers a thrilling ride through the backwaters enjoying the beauty of the village side.

Tali Temple

Tali Temple was built in the 14th Century by Swamy Thirumulpad and is one of the most famous and beautiful temples in Kozhikode and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is renowned for the unique diving experience that this temple built in the typical Kerala Style of Architecture offers.

Kakkayam

Tali Temple was built in the 14th Century by Swamy Thirumulpad and is one of the most famous and oldest temples in Kozhikode and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The posture in the sanctum- sanctorum is that of Umamaheswara It is renowned for the integration of laterite and wood which is well portrayed through the typical Kerala Style of Architecture. The most important festivals celebrated in this temple is the Maha Shivaratri.This temple was attacked and destroyed by the Tipu’s army which was reconstructed by the Zamorin after the defeat of Tipu. Lord Ganapati and Ayyappa is worshiped inside the Ullambalam and Nagaraja is worshiped outside besides a big Banyan Tree.

Pazhassiraja Museum

The museum and art gallery is names after the renowned King Pazhassi Raja who was also called as ‘Lion of Kerala’.The museum is presently under the State Archaeology Department.The building portrays the uniqueness of Kerala style of architecture in all angles. Pazhassiraja Museum is a treasure house of historical artefacts that include antique coins and paintings, earthenware, models of temples etc. The special collections of the museum include the Panchaloha idols and stone statues described as ‘War heroes'. The Art gallery exhibits excellent paintings of the renowned Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma. They are known to make life like paintings of men and women. Underground gallery which has specimens that depict Hindu gods apart from war heroes is another attractive feature of this museum collections.

Peruvannamuzhi Dam

Peruvannamuzhi Dam is a quiet and serene place located in Peruvannamuzhi, a small beautiful village which nestled in the majestic Western Ghats. There are facilities for speed and row boat cruises which attracts tourists to this place. Smarakathottam - a garden built in memory of the freedom fighters and uninhabited islands of the region can be seen during boating. Peruvannamuzhi is rich in bird life with about 90 species of birds. The crocodile farm and snake park is another major attraction of this place. It is an eco-tourism destination with around 680 species of rare plants. The dense jungle and green hillocks surrounding the dam makes it an ideal spot for trekkers. The availability of a wide variety of spices and existence of the Indian Institute of Spice Research makes this place even more interesting.

Ettumanoor Shiva Temple

Ettumanoor Shiva Temple is a famous religious center in Kozhikode dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for the Shiva paintings in dancing pose known as “Pradosha Nritham” inside the temple. The angry looking eight headed Shiva idol is addressed by devotees as “Ettamanoor Appan”. The art and architecture of old Kerala is portrayed excellently in this temple. Dravidian art can be seen in the form of mural painting and idol carving in the walls of this temple depicting Krishna Leela, Ramayana and Bhagawad gita. A huge lamp stand in front of the temple that was built in the 16th Century is another tourist attraction. The best time to visit this temple is between October and March when it will be season of festivals here.

Kakkayam

Kakkayam is a beautiful dam site with picturesque landscape all around is treat to the eyes. The presence of exotic wildlife also attracts tourists in large numbers to this place. It provides tourists. It is an ideal destination to enjoy trekking and rock climbing activities. The rock climbing and trekking along the Kuttiady river will be a thrilling experience to adventure lovers. The Urakkuzhi waterfalls located in the Urakkuzhi Ghat area with countless streams and wonderful valleys also adds to the beauty of this place. The experience of walking through the hanging bridge over the waterfalls is memorable one. The best time to visit this place is November to March.
